If you ever watched any movies or TV shoes in the 1950’s you
would mostly see a businessman look. Like from a grey flannel suite, dark blue,
dark brown, and charcoal were some of the colors of a man’s office suite. Either
if he was just a low office man or a head of a major corporation. The postwar
years were growing rapid and going everywhere, but the cold war and the fear of
nuclear weapons also McCarthy Red-baiting drove a movement of change in
clothes. Basically Every man wanted to look like a good American, and just look
alike with everyone.
With
women clothing was gaining a major change in their wardrobe with longer, fuller
skirts and dresses, men’s clothing was just getting simpler and dual with their
suites in the 1940’s. Removing the shoulder pads and most double- breasted
suites. Jackets and trousers became shorter, although there was still a lot of
fabric in the trouser legs. Ties were slightly slimmer and shirts had a collar
less look. Everyone still wore a hat, but the brims became narrower than the
fedoras in the 1920’s.
The
hard working businessman can enjoy more leisure. With the Hawaiian pattern and
the ever-popular cowboy style inspired leisure shirts. Loafer shoes were
becoming more popular to relax and loaf around. The trousers were worn only
just for business events also loose wool flannels. Jeans were worn only during extreme
sporting events, also this was soon to change among younger men. Instead of
them wearing a vest to keep warm they wore a cardigan sweater to keep warm.
They would also wear a sports jacket that was usually plaid or another dark
pattern.
